LuxSpace Sarl selected as distributor of global Satellite AIS information products

2008-11-19

LuxSpace has recently signed a contract with Orbcomm Inc. on the distribution of satellite AIS from Orbcomm’s six Quicklaunch satellites to European customers. “We have the AIS data stream from Orbcomm since a week and we already can see that this is a unique information source for the maritime sector” said Jochen Harms, Managing Director of LuxSpace.

AIS, or the “Automatic Identification System” is a technology embarked on all vessels above 299 GRT, which is used as anti-collision system. Coastal countries have established shore based receiving stations to monitor the vessel traffic. However, the reach of these stations is limited to more or less 100 nautical miles. Satellite AIS is considered as an add-on to the coastal stations that extends the vessel monitoring capability for safety and security aspects to a global scale for both the institutional and private sector.

First AIS data are now provided to various service providers in Europe within the frame of the ESA funded MARISS project.
