Space-based technologies to be used to help provide HIV/AIDS medicines in Africa
2006-07-12
In Africa in particular, where the infrastructure is frequently wanting, the regular and permanent provision of HIV/AIDS treatments constitutes a logistic challenge. In this study, the three partners are seeking to address these challenges. The approach they are taking is this: By employing space-based technologies such as satellite communications, the logistic distribution of medicines and the deployment of doctors is to be coordinated more effectively.
Of the various
strategies in the war against HIV/AIDS, the antiretroviral therapy
(ART) has proved to be an effective treatment. However, this therapy
calls for the patient to take a cocktail of medicines each day and to
undergo regular medical examinations and checkups. This is the only way
of adjusting the medicines in accordance with the patient’s individual
needs and ensuring the best possible treatment.
The study is to have a duration of one year.
